What is Freedom Food?

We are the RSPCA’s farm animal welfare assurance scheme - the only farm assurance scheme in the UK dedicated solely to improving farm animal welfare.

Our experienced team of assessors check farm animals have been well cared for to welfare standards set by the RSPCA.

We are the only scheme that uses higher welfare standards set by the RSPCA.

The RSPCA’s welfare standards cover the whole of an animal’s life, from their health and diet to environment and care. This includes things like space, light, bedding, transport and humane slaughter.

We inspect indoor as well as outdoor farms, including free range and organic. The scheme also approves hauliers, abattoirs, processors and packers, and we have more than 3,500 members.

Freedom Food assessors carry out annual assessments and RSPCA farm livestock officers make monitoring visits.

When all aspects of an animal’s life have been covered by the RSPCA’s welfare standards by members of the Freedom Food scheme, food products can be labelled RSPCA Assured.

If you or your customer wants to sell a product as RSPCA Assured to another business you must be a Freedom Food member, regardless of whether the product is labelled or not.

  • More than 700 million farm animals - plus many millions of salmon and trout - have had better lives farmed to the RSPCA’s welfare standards since the Freedom Food scheme began.
  • There are currently about 40 million terrestrial farm animals - plus many millions of salmon and trout - being farmed under the Freedom Food scheme
  • More than a quarter of all UK pig production, 50% of egg laying hens and more than 70% of Scottish farmed salmon are farmed to RSPCA welfare standards under the Freedom Food scheme

Official, uniform and fair

Freedom Food is recognised by the UK government and EU as a higher level scheme.

It is independent from the food and farming industry.

It is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the RSPCA but is a charity in its own right and operates independently.

UKAS accreditation by NSF-CMI International to ISO 17065.

This ensures that the scheme is official, uniform and fair.

Thousands of products

There are about 2,000 different RSPCA Assured labelled products available across nearly all the UK’s supermarkets.
